Whenever I take care of my liver, my skin loves me.
Our liver detoxes our bodies, so loving on our liver makes sense right. When our liver is clogged, our bodies don’t function well and given this is important to me, I thought you might like some tips on foods and ways to detox your liver.
You’ll feel better just reading this list, so imagine how you’ll feel when you implement a few things.
Foods to bring in:
- Almonds
- Apples
- Asparagus
- Berries
- Black pepper (see Turmeric)
- Cardamom
- Citrus fruits e.g. lemons, oranges & grapefruit
- Cruciferous veggies e.g. cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts.
- Dark leafy greens
- Fennel
- Fermented foods
- Fibre rich foods like porridge, fruits & veggies, beans etc.
- Flaxseeds, preferably freshly ground or soaked
- Garlic
- Ginger
- Ox Bile supplement
- Root Veggies e.g. Beets, potatoes & sweet potatoes
- Seaweed & sea veggies
- Turmeric (consume it with black pepper, to activate the Curcumin in Turmeric, which can help to reduce inflammation in your body)
- Water
Now it’s not all about food, because you can be eating all the ‘right’ things and your liver still needs some love, so try these things:
- Reducing alcohol intake
- Reduce stress
- Increase muscle mass and decrease body fat
- Increase the health of your gut microbiome
- Exercise regularly
- Reduce toxins by choosing low-tox or no-tox options e.g cleaning products, skin care, hair care etc.
- Reduce processed foods and sugar
- Focus on a Mediterranean diet
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, our livers are a Yin organ and it’s partner Yang organ is the Gallbladder.
The liver is responsible for emotions, Qi and blood.
Stagnation can be an issue with the liver, so doing things that support its flow is really beneficial.
Anger is seated in the liver, so process anger, let it flow, play with it. Understand that anger doesn’t have to have violence attached to it. It’s safe to be angry and we can hold more than one emotion at the same time, so even if you’re angry, can you find at least one other emotion that’s there too?
Often that other emotion will help lift your emotional state, but make sure you process the anger through sitting with it, because if we don’t it can get stuck, become stagnant and we don’t want that because that’s when dis-ease in the body can manifest.
Traditional Chinese Medicine also recommends we stop eating 2-3 hours before bed, but as always, tap into what’s true for you.
Have fun experimenting with these options, see what works for you and let go of what doesn’t work for you. Also, see what your liver responds to, you’ll generally see a shift within 2-3 days, but if your liver is particularly, clogged, give it some time. 2 weeks is such a small pocket of time, but it can create great shifts.
Much love
